Mount Sugarloaf plein air sketch

Vine Charcoal layout on a piece of linen
Here I'm beginning to think about how to modify the colors to indicate the dramatic ariel recession.
It was slow going and I will have to go back to finish the piece.

Here I am back in  Western Massachusetts after a painting holiday in Maine. And there is no grander place to paint than at the top of Mount Sugarloaf on a hot summer's day.
Like White Head, on Monhegan Island, this iconic view has been painted and photographed hundred's of times.

I took out the rail fence in the foreground

Adding to our pleasure, a Red Tailed Hawk flew back and forth, calling and swooping, between our perch on the observation tower and the fields below.

Maine Plein Air

White Head from Gull Cove, Monhegan: plein air oil on linen 12x16

I was pleased with this oil sketch of White Head, on Monhegan Island. The mist that surrounded the headlands was beginning to burn off, and the gulls took turns wheeling above my head.
