Fall 2021

Alfalfa Field and Silo: Fall

Saturday, July 17, 2021

It's been ages since I've posted, probably because I wasn't doing a lot of painting on site...

The other day I pulled out a 20 year old sketch book, and decided to do an oil sketch from one of them; a view of the center of Huntington, MA.....

Now, I've discovered that  to paint successfully from a sketch, I need to remember  the  original inspiration.  My  first oil sketch  from the old pencil sketch "forgot" what the real emotion was.

It's just a comic book colored-in image.

What was it really about?

It was about how sometimes, when you drive up Route 20 from Westfield, into Huntington,  you are treated to a brilliant flash  of sun light that has found its way between the shadowed hills. Startling and beautiful.

So now I have a plan for my next oil painting!

Plen Air work

I haven't been painting out of doors a lot this past year.  Here are several recent 10x16's, oil on canvas. I've been ordering lovely Walnut frames brushed with bronze from Florida Frames. They come in two widths.

On my easel today

: 9x9 oil on linen board;  still life in progress:
I call myself a  plein air landscape painter because that's what I like to do..
and because no way am I a still life painter.
But it's been a long cold winter.
This painting started out with a  green background,   but  discovered it did nothing for the bowl, .. Ended up mixing purple into the green....
